Professional Experience and Interests

Over the 20 plus years of my work in adult mental health I have taken a particular interest in the understanding of the development of mental health problems in an individual's life and, how to address this to bring about positive health gain. This approach has led to a career interest into the role of traumatic life events in the development of mental health problems. I have been frequently impressed how this understanding has brought about improved wellbeing for many people. I have used this knowledge and interest to run treatment groups for chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and unresolved grief and loss. For many years I have provided group and individual supervision and support for other qualified practitioners working with those suffering from the consequences of trauma.

It is important to emphasise that not all those who suffer do so due to traumatic events in their life. However, there is also for people in this situation a developmental understanding to their difficulties. Having a developmental understanding, in my opinion and experience, provides a foundation or platform to work from to build change and wellbeing.

Before pursuing a career in Clinical Psychology I worked voluntarily for a well known national organisation providing support and care to those facing distressing circumstances in their life. In the nine years I worked for this organisation this support was provided at major public festivals and public gatherings. At the end of my time with them I was an event organiser and volunteer leader, and chair of the organisation.

Currently I work as a consultant grade Chartered Clinical Psychologist and professional lead within the National Health Service (NHS) specialising in Adult Mental Health.
